MELCA Ethiopia has organized the “Sheka and Majang Cultural Biodiversity Celebration”  on December 27, 2014 at Tepi town. The idea of this celebration was to bring together different SEGNI groups so as to share their culture and activities they are currently implementing in their respective areas. Around 3,000persons joined for this celebration. It was attended students and Tepi town residents, as well as by Zone sector office representatives, Yeki woreda sector office representatives and Social Empowerment through Group Nature Interaction (SEGNI) club participants from four project areas.
Different groups presented their cultural dances, recited poems and showed little plays focusing on the role of culture and natural resource conservation. One of the messages of the play was “With the current pace of deforestation and forest degradation, we might lose most of the traditional medicine our ancestor used to use to treat several diseases.” Prizes were given out for selected school clubs targeted by the CSFII project. Finally, the participants visited the exhibition prepared by the respective SEGNI groups. The majority of them brought different medicinal plants from their respective locality, to highlight Ethiopia's rich biodiversity and the need to protect it.
The event was broadcasted as a program on Gambella region TV, news on SNNPR TV and on local FM Radio.
